World of Warcraft is the most popular MMORPG to ever exist. With 855 mounts in WoW, the 15 rarest WoW mounts are those that hardcore World of Warcraft players seek to obtain.
This list features the rarest mounts in WoW that are still obtainable in 2023. We have excluded any rare retired mounts and event mounts that are given as rewards for PvP in previous seasons. These rare mounts in World of Warcraft are solely for retail WoW and excludes WoW Classic mounts.
At the very bottom of this list of the rarest WoW mounts, you will find all Trading Card Game mounts. These mounts are still obtainable, despite the TGC being canceled back in 2013. We excluded TCG mounts from the main list but they are still extremely rare and can be found at the bottom of the list.
15. Risen Mare

The 15th rarest mount in WoW that is still obtainable to this day is possibly the Risen Mare. Although there are no exact statistics, it is estimated that only 2% of all accounts have managed to obtain the Risen Mare.
Design-wise, the Risen Mare looks almost identical to the Forsaken Horse mounts, however, unlike the Forsaken Horses, the Risen Mare doesn’t have a saddle.
The Risen Mare is obtainable for both Horde and Alliance players.
How to Obtain Risen Mare:
To obtain the Risen Mare, you will need to do lots of Island Expeditions Scenarios. Island Expeditions are special 3-player scenarios that were introduced in Battle For Azeroth.
Every week there are new salvage crates that you can purchase from your rewards. You need to be on the lookout for the Havenswood Salvage crate which can be purchased in Dazar’alor (Captain Kitt) and Boralus (Captain Nightrunner).

14. Palehide Direhorn

The Palehide Direhorn is a rare World of Warcraft mount for 2 reasons. The first reason being that it costs 500,000 gold. The second reason is that it’s an unused variant from Mists of Pandaria’s Direhorn mounts.
Mount collectors will have to save a up a bit to get their hands on this extremely rare WoW mount.
How to Obtain Palehide Direhorn:
Save up 500,000 Gold and head over to Talutu in Zuldazar or Tricky Nick in Tiragarde Sound and simply purchase it.
13. Yellow Marsh Hopper

The Marsh Hopper mounts come in 3 variations, Yellow, Blue, and Green. The Yellow Marsh Hopper mount is the least popular choice of the 3 with only 2% of all accounts owning this rare WoW mount.
The Marsh Hopper mounts are the spawn of Krag’wa the Huge and both Horde and Alliance can obtain the Marsh Hopper mounts.
How to Obtain Yellow Marsh Hopper:
Head over the Gottum Da Froggman in Nazmir and simply purchase the Yellow Marsh Hopper for 333,333 Gold.
Gottum Da Frogman is located in a cave under arching tree roots on the south side of the swamp, and west of Krag’wa’s Burrow.
12. Plagued Proto-Drake

Originally the Plagued Proto-Drake was an achievement reward for users that completed the Glory of the Raider (10 player) achievement. However, in Patch 3.1 the mount was retired and as of the Mists of Pandaria expansion, the Plagued Proto-Drake could only be obtained through the Black Market Auction House making it one of the rarest mounts in World of Warcraft to date.
How to Obtain Plagued Proto-Drake:

11. Mechagon Peacekeeper

Introduced in Path 8,2 the Mechagon Peacekeeper is one of the rarest WoW mounts that is still obtainable. Only 1% of all accounts have managed to claim the Mechagon Peacekeeper mount by defeating the HK-8 Aerial Oppression Unit.
Design-wise, the Mechagon Peacekeeper looks like a mechanical spider tank.
How to Obtain Mechagon Peacekeeper:
To obtain the Mechagon Peacekeeper, you will need to do Operation: Mechagon on Mythic located on Mechagon Island.
Just farm the HK-8 Aerial Oppression Unit on Mythic until the Mechagon Peacekeeper drops.
10. Prestigious Midnight Courser

- Drop Location: Honor Level 250
- Dropped By: Achievement
- Mount Type: Ground, Flying

The Prestigious Midnight Courser is the 9th rarest WoW mount with only 1% of players having obtained it.
Prior to the Battle For Azeroth, players could obtain the Prestigious Midnight Courser through the Prestige Rank system (hence the name of the mount).
Besides the Prestigious Midnight Courser, there are 5 other rare mounts that share the same model: Azure, Bronze, Forest, Ivory, and Royal Courser.
How to Obtain Prestigious Midnight Courser:
Reach Honor Level 250 to unlock the Prestigious Midnight Courser via Achievement.
9. Thundering Cobalt Cloud Serpent

With only 1% of all World of Warcraft accounts owning this mount, the Thundering Cobalt Cloud Serpent is easily one of the rarest mounts in WoW.
The Isle of Thunder is an island located northwest of Kun-Lai Summit and Townlong Steppes in Mists of Pandaria and the Thundering Cobalt Cloud Serpent originally required Serpent riding which was later removed. Moreso, you are also required to have Order of the Cloud Serpent at Exalted.
How to Obtain Thundering Cobalt Cloud Serpent:
Head of to the Isle of Thunder and search for a giant serpent World Boss named Nalak. You can use a Mogu Rune of Fate weekly to increase your odds.
Unfortunately, the drop rate is estimated to be 0.06% so you might be grinding a while to get this drop. Alternatively, you could check out the Black Market Auction House and try to get your hands on one of the rarest WoW mounts available.
8. Heavenly Onyx Cloud Serpent

- Drop Location: Kun-Lai Summit
- Dropped By: Sha of Anger

Similar to the Thundering Cobalt Cloud Serpent above, the Heavenly Onyx Cloud Serpent is an extremely rare WoW mount that drops from a World Boss.
Introduced in Patch 5.0.4, the Heavenly Onyx Cloud Serpent has only been obtained by 1% of all accounts on WoW worldwide.
How to Obtain Heavenly Onyx Cloud Serpent:
Search for Sha of Anger in Kun-Lai Summit (spawn location is 54, 64). Sha of Anger only has one spawn location so just stick around there to farm him.
When Sha of Anger spawns, you have about 5 seconds to get a tag in while he is shielded. Before he spawns you will see some black vapor geysers indicating that he is about to spawn.
7. Son of Galleon
- Introduced: Patch 5.0.4
- Drop Location: Valley of the Four Winds
- Dropped By: Galleon
- Mount Type: Ground
- Owned by: 1% of accounts
- Account Wide: Yes
Slay Galleon and capture his son to use as your personal mount for all eternity. That sounds pretty brutal but that is the story behind Son of Galleon.
Despite Galleon spawning every 15 minutes, only 1% of all WoW accounts have managed to loot Son of Galleon from his father.
How to Obtain Son of Galleon:
Head over to the Valley of the Four Winds and search for Galleon. Galleon spawns at 71.6, 64.4 every 15 minutes. You will most likely find a bunch of players camping the spot in hopes to loot Son of Galleon.
Alternatively, you could try your luck on the Black Market Auction House as Son of Galleon can also be obtained there.
6. Silent Glider
- Introduced: Patch 8.2
- Drop Location: Nazjatar
- Dropped By: Soundless
- Mount Type: Ground, Flying
- Owned by: 1% of accounts
- Account Wide: Yes
Silent Glider is the 5th rarest mount in World of Warcraft, with a drop rate of just 0.54% from Soundless in Nazjatar. Your best bet is to join the official discord group and form a group to hunt Soundless.
Despite the mount’s name being Silent Glider, it is in fact not so silent after all. When you fly around on Silent Glider you constantly hear a fart-like noise emitting from Silent Glider.
How to Obtain Silent Glider:
The drop rate for Silent Glider is just 0.54% so there are multiple ways to farm this incredibly rare mount.
Your best approach would be to get all your capable Alts to the spawn location of Soundless. Soundless spawns in Nazjatar, in the open area just below Azsh’Ari Terrace. Join a group and wait for Soundless to spawn. When Soundless spawns, hit him once (make sure you don’t miss) and leave the group (super important!). Afterward, log out of your character and log in with as many Alts as you can and repeat the process.
When Soundless dies, check the inboxes of all characters that participated in the kill to see if you received the mount.
Some players have said that Multi-tagging this way can be a waste of time as the drop rate seems to be lower so you should definitely first try without multi-tagging and witnessing Soundless die before your eyes.
5. Solar Spirehawk

- Drop Location: Spires of Arak, Black Market Auction House
- Dropped By: Rukhmar
- Mount Type: Ground, Flying
- Owned by: 1% of accounts
- Account Wide: Yes
Surprisingly, Solar Spirehawk is a ground-only mount. This rare World of Warcraft mount can be obtained by defeating Rukhmar in Spires of Arak.
Rukhmar spawns every 15 minutes at 47.1, 78.4 and you can estimate to spend a long time farming her. Some other players had to defeat Rukhmar over 2000 times before getting the Solar Spirehawk.
How to Obtain Solar Spirehawk:
Head over the Spires of Arak and spawn camp Rukhmar at 47.1, 78.4. Put on a TV show or listen to some music and eventually, you’ll be able to get your hands on the Solar Spirehawk.
Alternatively, you can test your luck at the Black Market Auction House and attempt to get it from loot boxes there.
4. Vicious War Elekk
- Introduced: Patch 7.0.3
- Drop Location: Stormwind City
- Dropped By: Necrolord Sipe
- Mount Type: Ground
- Owned by: 1% of accounts
- Account Wide: Yes
The 3rd rarest mount in WoW that is still obtainable is the Vicious War Elekk. The other Vicious mounts are also incredibly rare, but out of all of them, the Vicious War Elekk has the lowest amount of people owning it.
If you are a hardcore PVP player, getting your hands on Vicious Saddles (the item required to loot the War Elekk) won’t be too much of a problem.
The following races can get their hands on the Vicious War Elekk: Human, Dwarf, Night Elf, Gnome, Draenei, Worgen, Pandaren, Void Elf, Lightforged Draenei, Kul Tiran, Mechagnome.
How to Obtain Vicious War Elekk:
Play enough Arena matches to get a rating of 1400, afterwards, you will need to fill up the progress bar for the seasonal mount (that’s not this one). The easiest and most efficient way is to play 3v3 Arena matches as each match will grant you 1-2% of progress.
After you receive the seasonal mount you’ll be able to unlock Vicious Saddles. Vicious Saddles can be used to purchase various ‘Vicious’ mounts. You can watch this video to see how you can obtain the Vicious War Elekk and other Vicious mounts in just 2 days.
3. Felblaze Infernal

Surprisingly, less than 1% of all WoW accounts have managed to obtain the Felblaze Infernal. Recently (in 2023), various players have been extremely lucky in getting the Felblaze Infernal in less than 100 attempts.
The Felblaze Infernal is often confused with the red Hellblaze Infernal which also drops from Gul’dan but the Felblaze is definitely rarer.
How to Obtain Felblaze Infernal:
Farm Gul’dan in The Nighthold in Normal, Heroic, and Mythic difficulties. Alternatively, you can find a Felblaze Infernal on the Black Market Auction House.
Keep in mind that the loot box is not personal loot, so even if it drops and you are in a group – there is a chance you don’t get it.
2. Prestigious Bloodforged Courser

A surprisingly low percentage of people have managed to get their hands on the Prestigious Bloodforged Courser.
If you thought the Midnight Courser was hard to get, think again! To unlock the Prestigious Bloodforged Courser you need to reach Honor Level of 500.
When the Bloodforged Courser stands on its hind legs, it doesn’t do a twirl but instead briefly breathes fire.
How to Obtain Prestigious Bloodforged Courser:
Previously you could use a glitch in Darkshore which would get you to Level 500 in just a few days. That glitch is however no longer possible making this one of the rarest WoW mounts, so you will need to grind all the way to Honor Level 500 to get your hands on this epic mount.
1. Slime Serpent

Slime Serpent was the rarest mount in World of Warcraft by far. Released in Patch 9.0, the Slime Serpent was only first found on April 19th 2021 by a hunter in Plaguefall.
Recently players have been swarming to get their secret Slime Serpent mount after it was initially discovered. Obtaining the secret mount is actually not as hard as you just need to solo the last 2 bosses of the Plaguefall dungeon. The hard part was discovering how it would initially appear for players to collect it.
How to Obtain Slime Serpent:
To obtain the Slime Serpent, you need to solo the last 2 bosses in the Plaguefall dungeon on Heroic difficulty. Once you’ve done this, you will find the Slime Serpent waiting outside where you can pet it which will unlock the mount.
