Before the Fairy-type came along, Dragon-type Pokémon were some of the most powerful creatures around. Choosing the best dragon type Pokémon was no easy task, as they were all relatively amazing!
While these species aren’t as powerful as they once were, they are still a force to be reckoned with if left unchecked.
So, if you are interested in finding out the best dragon type Pokémon of all time – check out our list!
15. Reshiram
Reshiram is a powerful fire-type dragon Pokémon and looks just as awesome as its counterpart, Zekrom.
Something about a fire-breathing dragon feels a little cliché, but Reshiram still manages to feel unique regardless.
It also looks really cool when combined with Kyurem, so we have to give it some props.
14. Charizard
Pikachu and Charizard are perhaps the two most recognizable Pokémon of all time. While Charizard isn’t technically a dragon, no list of dragon Pokémon would feel complete without it.
Charizard has made waves not only in the anime as Ash’s less-than-enthusiastic partner but also in the competitive scene. Charizard has always been a threat, able to dish out heavy damage (when not crippled by Stealth Rock).
Thankfully, Charizard did manage to attain Dragon-type status with its Mega Evolution.
13. Kommo-o
Kommo-o is really unique and the only fighting dragon-type of its kind. Unfortunately, because of its typing, it does receive a few extra weaknesses that don’t do its viability any favors.
Add to this, subpar stats when compared to some of the more powerful pseudo-legendaries, and Komoo-o becomes a bit too forgetful.
Still, it has a really cool design and unique typing, which can’t be faltered.
12. Salamence
Salamence is by far one of the coolest dragon-type Pokémon out there. As a pseudo-legendary, Salamence has always been a terror of competitive Pokémon play.
Game Freak clearly knows that Salamence is a force to be reckoned with, as when they were dishing out Mega Evolutions to other competitive mainstays (like Metagross and Scizor), Salamence was right there to receive his Mega Evolution as well.
When in doubt, including a Salamence on your team will likely put you in a favorable position.
11. Palkia
Palkia is the mascot of Pokémon Pearl and a great Dragon-type Pokémon all-around. Its secondary Water-typing cancels out one of Dragon’s biggest weaknesses – Ice.
Before the introduction of the Fairy-type, this meant that Palkia only had one real weakness – other dragons!
Even now that the Fairy-type is here, Palkia is still a solid pick for any Dragon-type enthusiast.
10. Dialga
As the master of time, Dialga is the counterpart of Palkia and still has a very cool design. Its steel-typing opens it up to more weaknesses, but when you look that good, who cares?!
Dialga looks incredibly strange, however, in Legends: Arceus. Something about this legendary duo’s design in that game just feels off.
Still, its original design is top-notch, and that will never change.
9. Dragonite
Dragonite has been left in the lurch by Game Freak despite being the OG dragon-type Pokémon itself. Zero Mega Evolutions, Zero Regional Forms, and Zero branching evolutions have left Dragonite fans begging for a scrap of respect to be placed on their favorite Pokémon’s name.
Dragonite has always been a powerful pick, so much so that Lance had three of them on his team! Even in the movies, Dragonite is always presented as a gentle giant – performing mail deliveries in the original movie, for instance.
Dragonite will always be the first-ever Dragon-type Pokémon, and it walked so that the rest of the Dragon-types could run (or should we say “fly”).
8. Garchomp
Garchomp is a terror in both competitive play and in casual runs through Generation IV. We’ve all had different experiences with Cynthia’s Garchomp at the end of Diamond and Pearl onthe DS, and these nightmares were only heightened in the remakes!
Garchomp hits like a truck and is far speedier than it has any right to be. You might be thinking that a Pokémon this powerful doesn’t need any more firepower. And you’d be right! That’s exactly why Game Freak decided to give this Pokémon a Mega Evolution!
Thankfully, Garchomp’s Mega Evolution is a little too slow to be competitively viable. However, if you run into one and aren’t faster than it, you better pray for its attack to miss.
7. Hydreigon
Hydreigon is another dragon-type Pokémon that was snapped up for competitive play during the brief period where only the regional dex can be used in VGC.
Its secondary dark typing proved very useful, and access to powerful special moves only bolstered its effectiveness.
Plus, this Pokémon has a very cool design and will fit right at home on any team.
6. Dragapult
Dragapult is the newest end-game dragon-type Pokémon and looks incredibly cool! It has such a unique design, and watching it fire its offspring at the enemy will never get old.
Add to this a very unique and helpful secondary typing – Ghost.
Dragapult has made a name for itself in competitive play and won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.
5. Dracovish
Dracovish is the most viable of the new fossil Dragon-type Pokémon from Generation VIII for one reason and one reason only. Fishious Rend! This is the full description of Fishious Rend:
“Fishious Rend deals damage. If the user attacks before the target or if the target switches in during the turn that Fishious Rend is used, its base power doubles to 170. Strong Jaw further increases power by 50%.”
A base 170 damage-dealing move is already ridiculous, but what ability do you think Dracovish gets? Yes, if Dracovish is running Strong Jaw (which it almost always is), nothing much will be able to live through an over 200-power move.
4. Haxorus
Haxorus is often forgotten when it comes to the late-game Dragon-type Pokémon. When it comes time to list favorite non-legendary Dragon-types, Garchomp, Salamence, and Dragapult seem to receive all the love, while Haxorus and Goodra are left in the dust.
This just isn’t fair, because Haxorus is still a great Pokémon if utilized correctly. It has extremely strong physical abilities, and after a quick Swords Dance or Dragon Dance, not much will be able to survive a hit from it.
3. Giratina
Giratina is the poster child for what might just be one of the most beloved third entries in a Generation ever next to Emerald. Being the literal embodiment of Lucifer himself, Giratina is the counterpart to Arceus’ godly statues.
This dragon-type Pokémon is super strong and traveling through the Distortion world to encounter it was really fun. Add to this a unique Origin Form, which makes its design look even more threatening, and you have a serious contender for the best Dragon type Pokémon of all time!
2. Eternatus
The big bad of Pokémon Sword and Shield, Eternatus can be battled in both its normal Dragon-type form and its godlike form.
This Pokémon is really cool and has a very unique design compared to some of the other best Dragon type Pokémon on this list.
It is also great at taking out Dynamax Pokémon thanks to its signature move – Dynamax Cannon.
1. Rayquaza
The snake-like Dragon itself just had to top this list. Pokémon Emerald is one of the most beloved Pokémon games of all time and has tons of ROM hacks to recreate the magic. Part of this has to be because you can add a level 70 Rayquaza to your team before even battling the Elite Four!
Rayquaza is so monumentally powerful, but then Game Freak decided to give it a Mega Evolution! Mega Rayquaza is the only Pokémon to ever be banned from Ubers, and forced competitive players to create a new category known as “Anything Goes.”
When you are solely responsible for changing the competitive scene of a decades-old franchise, you just know you have to be incredibly powerful.
