A video game genre known as “roguelike” or “rogue-like” features procedurally generated dungeons that change every time you exit an area.
One such example is the ROM hack “Pokemon Emerald Rogue,” which takes the base of the classic Pokemon game “Emerald” and transforms it into a rogue-like experience.
The hack retains elements of Pokemon such as catching and battling, but with many unique twists. Let’s delve into the specifics of this fascinating game.

Pokemon Emerald Rogue
Creator: Pokkabie
Game Base: Emerald
Language: English
How does it work?
During your adventure, everything from the routes you take, the encounters you have, and the items you collect are determined procedurally based on your progress.
After exploring a certain number of routes, you’ll come across a random gym leader with a team of Pokemon that match their assigned type, chosen procedurally as well.
The further you progress in a run, the tougher the gym leaders and other trainers become, using more challenging setups for their Pokemon.
Your ultimate goal is to make it all the way to the champion and defeat them to complete the run.
If you fail or finish a run, you’ll return to the hub area where you can purchase permanent items and catch new “starter” Pokemon to use in the next run.
As you progress in the game, additional buildings and NPCs in the hub area become accessible, allowing you to better prepare for future runs.
How long does a run take?
Usually lasts around 3-4 hours of in-game time. There is a quick save option, labeled as “REST” in the menu, which allows you to pause the game during a run and return later. However, it’s important to note that this option does not permit save scumming.
